First Flashmob in the World Heritage

25.06.2014

Yesterday, the 5th Anniversary of the Wadden Sea World Heritage was celebrated with a flashmob at Schillig, a village north of Wilhelmshaven. Inhabitants, children and tourists commemorated the inscription of this marvelous natural area on the World Heritage List 5 years ago in Sevilla.

Over 300 birthday guests met in the Wadden Sea and formed the number "5" to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the inscription of the Dutch-German Wadden Sea on the World Heritage list - the world´s largest tidal barrier island system indispensable for the global biodiversity.

With the inscription of the Danish part of the Wadden Sea and further offshore areas in Niedersachsen by the World Heritage Committee in Doha/Qatar, on Monday, 23 June, the Wadden Sea World Heritage is now complete.

"From Doha to Schillig - it shows the high valuation the Wadden Sea received from the world community and the great support of local people of all ages here in Schillig" says Jens Enemark, head of the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat, who returned from the Committee meeting in Doha the day before. "Together with our partners in the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany, in specific our colleagues at the National Park Agency in Lower Saxony, I am confident that the Outstanding Universal Value of Wadden Sea will be maintained and enhanced".

The party continued with music and drinks, and an information desk with microscopes to explore the "Small Fives" of the Wadden Sea. The event was cooperatively organised by the Wangerland Tourism Organisation, the National Park Centre Wangerland and the National Park Administration Lower Saxon Wadden Sea.
