Wadden Sea and Dolomites – Art and World Heritage

12.06.2014

The exhibition “Parallelen: Wattenmeer und Dolomiten – Kunst und Weltnaturerbe“ was initiated by Hermann Rogger and first shown last year in the Museum Rodolf Stolz in Sexten, Südtirol, Italy. In cooperation with the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park Authority it was now possible to show the exhibition in the Klimahaus in Bremerhaven.
Both World Heritage Sites were inscribed on the World Heritage List on 26 June 2009 but apparently they could not be more different yet very similar.

Jens Enemark gave the key note speech during the opening ceremony. He elaborated on the fascination of the parallels between the Dolomites and the Wadden Sea and underlined that exactly through art in all its various forms at this exhibition it was possible to really appreciate the exceptional nature of both sites. The emotional approach which art promotes opens more than other approaches for an understanding of the importance of the World Heritage Sites and for their preservation for future generations.

He further elaborated on the opportunities that the World Heritage status offers for the Wadden Sea Region. The recent signing of the Sustainable Tourism Strategy by all involved governments as well as non-government stakeholders clearly demonstrated the determination of the region to use this to both promote the protection of the Wadden Sea World Heritage and to raise the profile of the region in a positive way and to advance a sustainable tourism for the benefit of the local enterprises.
