Our Wadden Sea World Heritage
Since 2009, the Wadden Sea is on the UNESCO World Heritage List - such as other world famous natural wonders like the Grand Canyon in the USA and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It is the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats in the world, with natural processes undisturbed throughout most of the area. It is one of the most important areas for migratory birds in the world - up to 12 million birds pass through every year. Biodiversity on a worldwide scale is reliant on the Wadden Sea.
The people in the region are proud of Wadden Sea and this global recognition. They are also aware of the responsibility to protect and sustainably manage nature values of the Wadden Sea for the benefit of present and future generations.
Celebrating the 5th Anniversary
This year, the 5th anniversary of the World Heritage inscription is celebrated in the Wadden Sea, starting with the Dutch World Heritage Weekend on the 14-15 June 2014, followed by the German Anniversary Weekend on 27 -29 June. In addition, there will be further events organized on regional and local level by many organizations which will focus on the 5th Anniversary and offer also guided tours and excursions to experience the World Heritage:

Report your celebration event and join the World Heritage community
Would you like to join the celebration by planning an own event? For example, a birthday party or an excursion to allow people to experience the Outstanding Universal Value of the Wadden Sea? We would be delighted to list your event on our website and support you with World Heritage information material, such as poster, leaflets, pins or postcards (depending on availability).
If you are already planning an event and would like it to be featured on the official World Heritage website, please send a short description of your event (date, location, organizers, type of event, target audience, number of participants) and how you would like to communicate the World Heritage in an inspiring and innovative way.
